My Story

Roy Richard Scheider was an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated American actor. He was best known for his role as police chief Martin Brody in the 1975 blockbuster Jaws.

Scheider died on February 10, 2008 in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Hospital. He was 75 years old. The hospital did not release a cause of death, but Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital’s Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years. Scheider's wife attributed her husband's death to complications from a staph infection.

Roy Richard Scheider was born in Orange County, New Jersey, on November 10 1932. While he was recuperating from one of a series of bouts of rheumatic fever, Scheider took up boxing which earned him his distinctive broken nose.

He majored in history at Rutgers University and then Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, and had every intention of pursuing a legal career. But his involvement with his college's theatre programme convinced him that acting was his vocation.

Scheider earned two Academy Award nominations — a best-supporting nod for 1971’s “The French Connection” in which he played the police partner of Oscar winner Gene Hackman, and a best-actor nomination for 1979’s “All That Jazz,” the semi-autobiographical Bob Fosse film.

Scheider is survived by Seimer, his second wife; three children, including a daughter from his first marriage to Cynthia Bebout; a brother; and three grandchildren.
