My Story

Marian was born on Feb 2nd, 1938. As a new born baby she came with the family to live in Morecambe at our hotel. The War broke out so she did not see many holiday makers as we were taken over as a billet for RAF men. Her childhood was surrounded by a different lot of young men every week!  She went to St Mary’s Primary School and then Layton Hill Convent in Blackpool. Tiring of school she took a job with a brake-lining firm in the research department. She drove round the Lakes and Pennines with the researcher taking notes as he braked.   He encouraged her to take up engineering so she became an apprentice at De Havillands when they were designing and making the Comet aeroplane. She was the only girl there. In the final exams, she was one of four who got distinctions. Nevertheless, when the Comet failed, all the young men she had worked with got jobs in other aeroplane companies, no-one would take her. She had to find another career.   She settled on becoming a teacher of English as a foreign language so that she could travel the world. She worked in Spain, Portugal, Finland, Algeria, Italy, Saudi Arabia   Having taken postgraduate degrees, she specialised in teaching industrial and technical student English). She co-wrote ‘English for Specific Purposes: Mechanical Engineering.’   Wanting a change she started work as a technical author, writing instruction books for a firm which made one-off robots.   Finally she was headhunted to go to Oman to help with the foundation of a Training College for Women.   She then moved to the university teaching English to students of technical subjects before they started their courses.(All courses there were in English) She stayed there 13 years, became fond of the country and retired at the age of 71.   She retired to Dawlish in Devon, but she also needed a warm place and lived part of the year in Spain.
