My Story

Warren Bell, 10, from Easterside Middlesbrough, died suddenly from an asthma attack. He leaves behind devastated parents Shaun, Elaine, and sisters Megan, and Gabrielle.

Known as “Wazza” to his friends, his parents described him as a “typical little boy”, who loved mischief.

Warren had suffered with asthma for years but it had never stopped him from enjoying life.

He loved animals and took great care of his tropical fish, his African snail called Speedy and his corn snake Serena, which he was going to rename Kelloggs.

Warren had even made a pact with family friend Lauren Connors, 12, that they would one day both become vets.

A pupil at St Thomas More School, Easterside, Warren excelled in maths and problem-solving and enjoyed learning about war. He also liked Al Pacino and Scarface and once appeared on a homemade video on You Tube, pretending to be a gangster.

He loved his Playstation 3 and going to the skate park on his scooter with best friend Paul Robinson, 10, to practise his bunny hops.

And, like a typical big brother, he would tease his younger sister but always defend her too.

Described as his mum’s shadow, Elaine fondly recalls how Warren brought her a cup of tea as she lay poorly in bed with flu and would follow her to the shops on his treasured scooter.

“He had a good heart and was so loving when you needed him,” said Elaine, a caretaker at SureStart.

“He was really close to his cousins Aaron, 13, and Kieran Bell, 18, and Jack Liddle, 11.”

He also particularly loved cousin Jason Bell, 36, who had been poorly after having a stroke and losing the strength in one of his arms.

Elaine said: “Warren loved to go and see him and help by carrying his bags.

“Warren used to look forward to the holidays so they could get the bus to Stokesley together and look around the fair.

“If you asked Warren to do something he’d say ‘I’ll do it for £1.’

“His bedroom was always immaculate and he wouldn’t leave the house without his hair being gelled and his Paco Rabanne aftershave on.

“He was a loveable rip - everybody knew and loved him. He has left a hole in our lives.

“But, as Shaun says, Warren wasn’t given to us, he was borrowed, and put on this earth to break hearts.”

The couple expressed their thanks to friends and family who have offered their support and to all the medical staff involved in Warren’s care.

Footballing friends of Warren, who died on April 12, remember him as “The Tank” due to his stocky build and say that he was a formidable force on the football field.

A defender for Beechwood U10s, he had been playing for the club since he was eight.

U10s manager Kevin Horsfield said: “I’ll miss his cheek and his grin. He would give you this smile when he was in trouble. The players and parents loved him.

“Warren was a player who never stopped trying - a powerful player who never gave up.

“He had asthma but he would run to the sidelines for his inhaler and play on, he was that determined.

“He was a frightening sight for kids running towards him, but he was never afraid to tackle and could kick a ball for miles - everyone would chant ‘Wazza’ when he took a shot.

“Knowing we will never hear his name again is the hardest part, but we will play on and try to win just for him.

“He will be missed by everyone.”
