My Story

Tommy grew up in Albemarle, NC.  From the time he could walk, he fished.  Fishing was his life.  He was definatley an outdoors man.  He loved it when deer season came.  When asked what time he would be home, it was usually "dark 30".  I married Tommy in 1980.  The same year he joined the USAF.  He had been known as a young boy to set fires in the back yard, just to put them out.  So, therefore, what better occupation than a firefighter.  He was stationed at Eglin AFB and then at Myrtle Beach AFB, where we made the best of friends.  After getting out of the Air Force, he became a firefighter for the City of Myrtle Beach. He loved being that close to the ocean.  He was often called "Mr. Bill Dance".  I am sure that if we had had the funds and the time that Tommy could have become a professional fisherman.  He had a great talent for taking a plain old fishing rod and making it into a beautiful piece of equipment.  He spent many hours putting the eyes and his own speical touch on rods that he used as well as many that he made for his friends.  He was very political.  Rush Limbaugh was his "hero".  Tommy was a man of many opinions and he loved to share them. He wanted and worked for a better world for his family.  He became a Father in 1988.  Something that he thought would never happen.  At that point we moved back to Albemarle.  He spent alot of time raising his baby girl.  He taught her about fishing of course.  But mostly, he taught her great values.  He loved his family dearly.  Sometimes we felt a little competition with his fishing, but we knew what mattered most.  We did!   Tommy had alot of medical problems that not even he was aware of.  He had really bad arthritis and had to almost stop fishing.  That, to him , was almost like a death sentence. He had a sudden heart attack and  passed away at the age of 41.  Leaving behind his wife of almost 17 years and his nine year old daughter.  God took him home to fish in the crystal seas.  His work on earth was done.
