My Story

Stephanie was the youngest of four children, having one sister Anne and two brothers, Walter and Michael. Her parents, Alexander and Michaelina arrived from the Ukraine and married and settled in Winnipeg. Stephanie married August 10, 1946 to John Gelmych and they had a family of four girls - Judith, Diana, Stephanie and Cheryle. Stephanie always took pride in her girls and loved to cook, sew and sing. She was active in the community and church.
Stephanie had worked off and on throughout her marriage to help the family out. She loved having contact with people and one of her favorite places she worked was at a diner called the "Hi Spot" on the corner of McGregor and Arlington in Winnipeg. This gave her the people contact she loved.
Later on, after her husband passed, Stephanie worked helping seniors in a home and also worked at a drugstore in downtown Winnipeg. She developed a lot of friends over the years and every time she was out and about she always ran into someone she knew. Cooking was a passion of hers and she took great pride in her cabbage rolls, perogies and easter bread. She would often cook perogies and sell them to a devoted group who loved her cooking.
Over the years, Stephanie endured several health issues and always seemed resilient and bounced back. Her life was filled with a variety of experiences and she always had a bubbly personality and a smile for her friends, no matter what she was experiencing.
Stephanie is survived by her daughter Judith and son-in-law Russell, daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Lawrence, daughter Cheryle and son-in-law Howard, grandsons Ted and Michael, grandson John by deceased daughter Diana, granddaughter Uliana, great grandsons Mark and Luke and niece Gloria and her husband Bryan.
Many thanks to all the staff and caregivers who attended to all of Stephanie's needs at the Victoria Hospital. Also a special thank you to friends Maxine, Walter, Glen and Lily for their visits and support.
Stephanie passed peacefully at 11:17 pm on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg. The world is a little less brighter without her.
She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
