My Story

Hugh "Sonny" Grace, 56, of Higginsville, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. 

He was born May 26, 1953 in Lexington, Missouri, the son of Virgil Samuel Grace and Edith Maude (Sousley) Grace.  He was a graduate of Lafayette County C-1 High School. 

Sonny served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars from 1972-1994.  He reached the ranking of E-9 Command Sergeant Major. 

Sonny worked as Construction Manager for Black and Veatch.  Previously he worked as a Johnson county Deputy Sheriff following in his father's footsteps. 

Sonny lived in Kentucky, Germany, Kansas, Colorado and Arizona before moving back to Higginsville in 2008. 

He was a member of the Higginsville VFW. 

He was preceded in death by his father.  Survivors include his mother, Edith Grace of Higginsville, his girlfriend Rebecca Morfin with son Anthony, one son, Nick Grace of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters Victoria Grace of Littleton, CO and Allsion Grace of Centerview; three sisters, Louise Cocklin of Independence; Susan (Mark) McCulloch of Blue Springs and Sherry (Pete) Frerking of Higginsville and one grandson, Dylan Grace-Mitchell of Littleton, CO. 

Visitation was 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, at Hoefer Funeral Home in Higginsville.  The funeral service was 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11 at Hoefer Chapel in Higginsville with Pastor Tim Biesemeyer officiating.  Burial was in the Missouri veterans Cemetary in Higginsville.

Pallbearers were Dean Willie, James McMillin, Fred Morrisett, Nate Briscoe, Jim Evans, Shawn Guinn, Bill Briscoe and Jason Thompson.  Honorary pallbearers were David Hayes and David Tempel. 

The family suggest memorials to the American Heart Association or the Lafayette County Cancer Coalition.
