My Story

Trying to put Shield into words is hard to do. So many words can describe this young, courageous, determined man. He was loved by the family that was there to watch him grow & flourish. Being around him, he would always try to make you smile & laugh. He never liked to see his loved ones upset or hurt. For most of his life, he was raised in a single parent home, by his mom. She showed her love in many ways that included working as many jobs as she had to, worked full time & attended school, kept close tides with the family, helped him with his schoolwork & also encouraged him when it came to his art.

When Shield became a Big Brother, he took on a whole new role! He was so thrilled to have Jacob around to teach things to. As the two of them got older, Shield would always encourage his brother to focus on his education & that any dream was possible. Jacob will always look up to Shield for the values he taught him & the honesty that he always had.

Anyone that knew Shield would tell you that he was so genuine when it came it how he helped others. Anything that he did, was really from the heart. He was so real. And when he needed help, he was strong enough to admit it! He knew there were certain battles that he could not face alone.

He was loved by so many & has touched the lives of so many more. His Nanny Jo, Uncle Gary, & cousin Loretta were a big part of his elementary years. And by that I mean, he was either at their house, or Loretta was visiting his. In our family, we can be so close, you would think that we are all brothers & sisters because of the bond that is shared. The old saying goes... It takes a village to raise a child & that holds true to our family.

His Pappy & Granny also have always been a big part of his life. After Shield was born, he became his Pappy's shadow. Being a part of a family that is not afraid to show you love has allowed him to be such a generous spirit. When he said you were his friend, that meant that he felt like you were part of his family.

He was so talented when it came to art, he was gifted. If it involved putting a pen to paper, he was going to make it memorable. Pictures, portraits, poems, lyrics, they are all pieces of his heart & soul. Everyone that was close to him saw his talent & encouraged him to fulfill his dreams.

Shield struggled with many different things once he reached adulthood. But I was always inspired by his courage to reach out for help. There were many things he didn't understand, but he was not afraid to go at it with all he had. I don't know of many people that had that type of courage & willingness & determination.
