My Story

Our Dad was born on November 23, 1930 to Josefa and Raymond Serrano in Granite City, Illinois.  He had four brothers Raymond and Frank Serrano, Mercie Mendoza, and Roberto Galvan.  He also had three sisters Connie, Theresa, and Delores.  He lived in Granite City his entire life and worked as a switchman at Granite City Steel in their rail yards.   In about 1951 he met and married Nancy Antoff.  Together they had a set of twins, Richie (me) and Ricky.  The morning we were born we were told he ran all the way home down Niedringhaus Avenue he was so excited to have boys - two of them at that.  I don't think they knew there were two of us so he got a bonus.

When we were about 5 years old they divorced and we lived with our dad for only two happy years.  On January 16, 1959, as he was cleaning and unjamming a gun in our living room, it went off and hit him in an artery.  They could not stop the bleeding and he passed away.

From then on we were raised by our Grandmother Josefa and by our many aunts and uncles.  He left us wondering what could have been all our lives.  He would have been so proud now of how his boys turned out and of his grandchildren (two from me and two from my brother, and great grandchildren (three from me and three from my brother).  .Both my brother and I retired from the Army, Ricky as a Master Sergeant and I as a Chief Warrant Officer 4.  Rick served in Iraq and I served in both Vietnam and Desert Storm.
