My Story

Sandra Irene Burwellcarvey of Tacoma passed away on November 29, 2007 at the age of 69. She was visiting her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in Hamilton, VA. Sandra was born on January 16, 1938 to Richard V. and Phyllis I. Burwell in San Francisco, CA. At a young age, her parents moved to the Gig Harbor area of Washington. Sandra attended elementary school in Burley, and graduated from Tacoma’s Stadium High School in 1956. She also attended the University of Puget Sound. In 1958, she married Herbert Carvey and they had 2 daughters. They divorced in 1984. Sandra enjoyed volunteer work. Some of the organizations that she gave time to were: The Association for Retarded Children (ARC), SE Tacoma FISH, the Drug Action Coordinating Council (DACC), and Olympic Wildlife Rescue Center. She also gave much time to the Methodist Church working in several areas. After her daughters were both in school she taught kindergarten at Parkland Lutheran School for a few years. She also worked as an in-home caregiver, a filing clerk at Honda of Fife, and an office assistant for Washington Public Employees Association. Sandra loved the outdoors. She spent many years as a member of the Tacoma Mountaineers, during which time she climbed many of the minor peaks in the Cascades. Sandra is survived by her daughters Kathryn Irene Brenner (David) and Theresa Anne Corcoran (Cian), granddaughter Ashlinn Irene Corcoran, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sharon Brown, and brothers Richard and Phillip Burwell.
