EMOJENE LOUISE MOSS CAREY
A Celebration of Life

BEGINNINGS
Emojene Louise Moss Carey was born to Alberta Sartor Moss and Clarence Purvis Moss on March 31, 1932 in West Point Mississippi. At the age of 7 years old, she and her family moved to Shreveport LA where they stayed with her Uncle Reverend Warren William Sartor and his wife Henrietta. Her uncle and aunt taught her Christian values and the scriptures.

As a child, Emojene displayed a gifted musical talent. She began taking piano lessons in the sixth grade and became an accomplished piano player (without having a piano at home to practice). She sang and played both piano and organ at Camphor Memorial Methodist Church in Louisiana. She would later use her musical skills to direct adult and children's choirs.

Emojene was educated in Louisiana at the Little Hope School, Central Colored High School, and Sager-Brown Boarding School. She was accepted by academic scholarship to Allen High School in North Carolina. She later attended college at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she majored in Business Education. It was there that she met a handsome football player named Welton Carey from New Orleans, La. One of their initial dates was to a campus chapel service where Jene sang.

MATURING
Emojene graduated from Southern University in 1952. She accepted   her first teaching assignment at Tuskegee Institute High School. Welton & Emojene were married in 1956 at Lewis Metropolitan Church in Los Angeles. Emojene later received her Masters Degree in Education and taught in the Compton Unified School District. As passionate as Jene was about teaching children at Ralph Bunche Jr. High School, 59th Street School, and Whaley Jr. High School, her gifted qualities as a musician and choir director were displayed as the Director of the Children’s Choir at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Los Angeles. Jene and her dear friend Mrs. Frances Rhodes, worked with thirty young children for 8 years to craft an angelic musical sound that people still remember. Jene loved all types of music and she spent hours teaching the Children’s Choir gospel music; various Broadway hits and movie songs from the 1960’s, and traditional Easter and Christmas cantatas. Jene and Frances took these children to venues such at the Biltmore Hotel for concerts. They often performed at St. Paul’s in musical plays and were warmly received.

NEW BEGINNINGS
After retiring from teaching in 1993 from Whaley Jr. High School, Jene continued to enjoy spending time with her husband and family. She traveled often to Las Vegas, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Minnesota to fellowship with relatives. Emojene transitioned from this life to eternal glory with the Lord on August 18, 2008. She is survived by Welton Carey, Sr. her loving husband of 52 years; her 3 sons and their wives (Welton Jr. and Barbara Carey of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Warren and Nadine Carey also of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Warres and Tameika Carey of Hawthorne, California); her grandchildren, Joe Cephus McCloney; Warren Christopher, Leah Danielle, Jasmine Nicole, Daniel Henry, Brianna Monique, Welton Isaiah, Faith Danielle, and Christian Caffrey Carey; her sister Myrtle Moss Humphrey; a multitude of nephews, nieces, and a host of beloved friends.
