My Story

We are here today to pay our respects to my mother, Beatrice Armstrong.  A lot happens over a life of 97 years and it’s hard to imagine all the changes that took place over her lifetime.  We heard a lot from Mom about how difficult the Great Depression had been and it greatly influenced how she did things.  She knew that a garden could be a lifesaver and that became a central focus for her.  She was known for her beautiful garden wherever she lived and passed on her love of gardening to me.  We spent many happy hours tending flowers and vegetables, watching the cycle of life and helping to make things better wherever we could.  Sometimes I have been asked if my mother had been a teacher and I would say, “No, my father was a teacher”.  Now, as I think things over, I realize she was a very good teacher.  Also, people have said to me, “She’s a very strong woman” and “She’s very resilient”.  There are lessons in her character and how she lived her life.  Mom was always worrying, always planning and always keeping the train on the tracks.  Paige and I have certainly experienced in the past few days how much energy and effort it takes to keep that train on the tracks.  “Have you done this?  Have you done that?”  How on earth did she keep it all running so smoothly?

I admired Mom for how she kept learning throughout her life.  She learned to drive in middle age and took a gun licence course to fend off bears or whatever when they were moving up north.  In her 70’s she took her first and only plane trip to visit Ron in Bermuda.  During that week, Dad was lost without her.  In her 80’s she learned to use a computer to play games and while away the time.  She never stopped surprising me with what she could do.

In the last few difficult weeks of her life, as Mom was ready to say good-bye, I tried to remember the good times we had together.  I reverted to calling her Mommy again as I remembered how important she was to me as a child.  She loved us all:  children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family members and friends.  We didn’t go without the necessities of life even if we made bad decisions.  Mom was generous to passers-by, who just admired her flowers and were offered cuttings, bulbs, et cetera.  Today we celebrate the life of Bea Armstrong.  Thanks so much, Mom.  We love you.
