My Story

Mom was the oldest of ten children born to Thomas and Artie Gage in a small town in Texas in 1930. She adored her parents, and her younger brothers and sisters, and always talked about how she helped her Mom bring up the younger kids. They were not wealthy people growing up - in fact, they were quite poor financially but rich in love and laughter and she grew up to be such a strong woman because of it.

Mom was married to Andrew Burdeaux and together they had two children, Kathy and Glenn, and adopted a third, Shannon.  After they divorced, she went on to re-marry my Dad, Thomas Hughes on December 16, 1960, and in November of 1969 they adopted me.

My Mom was a multi faceted woman. She was an incredible wife and mother, and also a teacher, a PTA president, and was known for her wonderful cooking and baking - and especially her homemade breads! She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always so much fun to be around.

Mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 23 years old. We thought after her surgery that she was going to be ok and that we had beat it. But that was not to last for long. About a year later we found out that the cancer had returned and was in her liver. With that, she was given only months to live. She passed at home with my Dad by her side  in October of 1993.

Not a day goes by that she isn't on my mind. I loved her so much and still miss her more than I know how to express. I am so blessed to have had her for my Mom and I will always be so incredibly proud of the woman she was.
