My Story

My father William E. Hargrove was born on January 21, 1930 in Camden, New Jersey. He was one of six children, four girls and two boys. He was born to Frances and Wliiam Hargrove, his sister's were, Frances, Grace, Ann and Edna. He had a brother Jack. My father had a hard childhood as his father was not around much, his mother had to work so he was taken care of by his sister's most of the time. He went into the Military in his teens and served as a cook on a ship. After the Military he had a number of jobs. My father was a hard worker, he worked in sales door to door for a while. Then he worked as a cook, a janitor in several schools, He would walk to work in the winter because we didn't have a car. It may have been miles, but he walked it. He met my mother when they were young, they lived in the same town and my mother's mother knew his mother. They were married in December of 1952. My father got a job later on working as a boiler machanic in several hospitals. He had to take a course in this but this is what he did until he retired in the early 90's. He had six children, three girls, and three boys. After he retired he continued to work full time as a janitor in a local school. Then he went to part time for a while. He finally decided to retire for good and spent his time reading, he would read almost anything, watching tv, and playing with the many dogs he loved so much. My mother passed away in 1996 and after that he was ok for about five or six years, then he started getting heart problems. He had to have a pacemaker, but did well with it, thank God. Then his legs started to get weak and on top of that he developed Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. As time went on his memory began to fade, he would forget to shut things off, ect. In August of 2007 he developed trouble with his stomach, the doctors said it was an infection. He was in and out of the hospital from August 21st to September. Then he had to go to a nursing home for rehab for his legs. They were very weak by now and he would fall alot. He was only in the nursing home for about four or five weeks when he got worse with the infection he had. He was taken to the hospital from the nursing home on Oct 5, 2007. He died that afternoon, I was there but I don't know if he knew it. My father was a hard worker, loved old movies, loved to read, especially newspapers. He loved animals, especially dogs and had them pretty much through out his life. I love him and miss him, there are no words to describe the pain I go through daily. Five holidays went by so far without him, including his birthday. This will be the first Father's Day without him. I wish I could tell him one more time how much I love him and what he means to me. I was always telling him I loved him, and would give him a hug or kiss. He was 77 when he passed away, I pray he is in a better place and at peace.
