My Story

Willa Marlene Brown 1941 - 2011

Doctor Willa Marlene Brown, 69, of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on April 13, 2011 after a long illness.

Born on December 20, 1941 in Toronto, Willa was the daughter of the late William John Brown and Laufey Janusson Brown. Willa attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute, and graduated from Queens University Medicine in 1965. She interned at Toronto General Hospital and did a two year residency in Bermuda. Willa went on to work in Antigua before moving to Maryland. Willa earned an MPH at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and then went on to work in senior public health positions in Carroll County Maryland, Pinellas County Florida, Santa Clara California, Charles County Maryland, and the University of Maryland College Park Campus. Her last position was as Physician Specialist for the Howard County Maryland Health Department up until 2002.

Willa and her husband Bert enjoyed living in Washington DC, where she was active in the American Medical Women's Association. She had several leadership posts with them, and was nominated by the AMWA to be Surgeon General. Willa was an effective advocate for women's issues, a passion she shared with her long time friend and associate, the late Dr. Louise Wensel. Willa enjoyed sailing, travel, reading and museums. She was noted for her bright outlook and sense of humor.

Willa is survived by her devoted husband, Bert Wensel Brown of Charlottesville, Virginia, and her brothers, Frank Brown (Dorothy) St. Louis, Missouri,, Herbert Brown (Dorothy) of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Douglas Brown (Norma) of Burlington, Ontario.

Willa will be interred with her parents in St. James Cemetery in Toronto at 10:30am. A celebration of Willa’s life will be held on July, 23 at 12:00 noon at 117 Gerrard St. E reception room.
