My Story

Fred Davis was born in Opelika, Alabama, the last child of E. Fred and Pearl Davis. His mother, Pearl, died two months later, never having fully recovered from giving birth.

In 1949 at the age of 18, he married his childhood sweetheart, Emily Maloy, and they relocated to Amarillo, Texas.  Fred and Emily were married for 53 years before Emily passed away in February 2003.  They had four children: Wanda (b. 1951), Mark (b. 1957), Jennie (b. 1958), and Kelly (b. 1965).

Mr. Davis was President Elect of the Opelika Exchange Club. He was a Sergeant Major E-9 with the Alabama National Guard with 30 years of service and Captain of the Opelika Police Department with 22 years of service.  He was a member of American Legion Post 152 where he served as Post Commander and 24th District Commander. He was an active member of his church and the Fraternal Order of Police.

In 2005 He married his second wife, Avis, also of Opelika.  They enjoyed six happy years together, spending their time volunteering with the American Legion and traveling.

An avid fisherman and golfer for many years, he also enjoyed playing games with his friends, children and grandchildren, most memorably poker and dominos.  He was a tremendous domino player and brilliant strategist.  Anyone who ever played with him will remember him spinning his last domino, an obvious and often hilarious indication that he indeed would be the victor.

He passed away after a mercifully brief battle with lung cancer.  He is greatly missed.
