My Story

My Dad was born on February 8, 1922 to Edward and Edna (Bone) Deatherage in St. Louis, Missouri.  He had three brothers Edward (Bud), Robert, and William and two sisters Ruby and Juanita.  He married Brooksie South on June 27, 1942 and went in to the Army in 1943.  On March 10, 1944 their first son, Michael, was born and was almost 2 years old before his Dad saw him upon returning from WWII.  Throughout WWII he was stationed in England.  He returned from the war and went back to  work for the Terminal Railroad Association in St. Louis, Missouri.  Along the way, Mom and Dad had five more children:  Barry, Phyllis, John, Kathy, and Nancy.  Phyllis passed away on October 27, 2007 and we lost Michael on August 29, 2008 also to cancer.  We know he welcomed them to heaven with open arms and a great big smile.  Dad worked for the railroad for nearly 40 years.  He had his first heart attack in February 1981 and went back to work in June 1981.  Being a locomotive engineer is one of the worst occupations you can have if you have heart conditions.  On October 14, 1981 he had another heart attack while on the engine and was taken to St. Elizabeth's hospital in Granite City, Illinois.  He was alive, but alot of damage was done to the back of his heart and he died on October 16th, 1981 at 9:06 pm at only 59 years old.  He is very much missed by those who loved him.  He died before the majority of his grandchildren were even born and now he and Mom have a total of 12 grandchildren Jennifer Lynn Deatherage (daughter of Mike and Donna Deatherage), Janet Serrano, Richard Serrano (children of Kathy and Rich Serrano), Damon Wild, Derek (Toni) Wild (Phyllis Wild), Barry Deatherage Jr., Kenneth (Ashleigh) Deatherage, Kyle (Sarah) Deatherage, Anna Deatherage (Barry and April Deatherage), Michael Deatherage, Drew Deatherage, and Jay Deatherage  (John Deatherage), and 14 great grandchildren Tennessee Ann Wild, Caden Wild (children of Derek and Toni) and Kai Alan (son of Damon and Wendy and grandchildren of Phyllis), Alex Michael (son of Michael and grandson of John), Parker (son of Jay Parker and grandson of John) Zachary Anderson, Gavin Anderson, and Briana Altory Brook Anderson (children of Janet and grandchildren of Kathy and Rich Serrano), Colby and Cason Serrano (sons of Amber and Richard and grandsons of Kathy and Rich Serrano,  Kaylee and Camden Deatherage (daughter and son  of Kyle and Sarah), and Dawson Michael and Dayton Kenneth (sons of Kenny and Ashleigh granddaughter and grandsons of Barry and April).
