My Story

A fiery car crash early Friday morning claimed the life of a 19-year-old Niles man and sent his friend to the hospital with injuries. The death of Christopher N. Cope is the sixth traffic crash-related death involving a young person locally in the past three weeks. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Cope, and 19-year-old Shawn C. McNear, were driving north on Pine Avenue S.E. shortly before 12:30 a.m. when their 1996 Chevrolet Corsica lost control, overturned and struck a tree near DeForest Road S.E. The car then caught fire. Cope, was pronounced dead at the scene. McNear was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was treated and released.
