My Story

How do you sum up the life of someone so dear? No matter how adept and thoughtful you are, to take such memories and create a real picture is impossible, as perhaps it should be. There are so many memories … so many birthdays and Christmases, there are school plays, graduations and summer vacations to remember, but the true meaning of family is so much more than occasions and happy holidays. Parents guide us through an uncertain childhood, supporting, loving, and teaching. They are the role models for the adults that we will become and a part of them will always live on inside us. My mother taught us so much, and I see so much of her in each of my sisters and in myself as well.

Cecile was a compassionate, humble, and loving woman with a deep faith in God and an absolute devotion to her children. She would do anything for us, and we knew that. She also gave just as much of herself to her grandchildren. Stephanie and Christopher knew her when she was still vital and healthy. My mother was the rock of our family, and when she got sick, it broke our hearts. To endure watching this loving woman suffer the way she did was a struggle for all of us who loved her. My sisters and I did what we could to help her through her illness and although it was hard, I felt honored to care for her in my home when I could. As her dementia progressed, it became harder and harder to communicate with her. After her stroke last March, her dementia seemed to lift for a day or so. We had the most amazing conversation that day. I had the chance to tell her how much I love her and she affirmed her love for me; when I apologized for failing her in some areas of my life, she forgave every one. I thanked her for giving me such a wonderful childhood. When I explained that she had taught me how to be compassionate by example, she understood what her love had accomplished, not only in my life, but in the lives of so many other people. We talked and cried until she fell asleep, yet the relentless progress of her dementia returned within the next few days.

Why is it that we don’t tell the people we love what is in our heart when they are able to hear it? Maybe it’s because we never expect them to be gone, even though within ourselves we know it may be the reality. If the value of a life is the love we give, then we have all been provided with the greatest thing anyone can ever receive: unconditional love from a person who always deserved it in return.
