My Story

Cheers to my father. While it was a very sad day when we received the news of my father’s passing away in his sleep earlier morning November 11, 2010 it didn’t really come as a total surprise as he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer about 6 months before this and he was experiencing quite a bit of pain. It’s hard to say that his passing is a relief but I can say I am glad he went in his sleep and he really didn’t suffer too much. All this said let me tell you about my dad because no one knew him quite like me. For one, which I’m sure a lot of his friends, co-workers acquaintances and teachers knew that my dad is a genius. He had as many school awards for achievements than just about anyone you would know including his graduating from MSC, which became USM back in 1961 where he attended on a full football scholarship. He was an offensive tackle and good one! But, did you know that my dad also had conquered all these achievements in his life: · 1958 - For Meritorious Achievement – Chemistry and Engineering Honor Roll · 1960-61 - Who’s Who Among Students Universities and Colleges – Mississippi Southern College · 1961 - Bachelor of Arts - Mississippi Southern College · 1983 - Master of Science - Southeastern Institute of Technology · 1983 - Outstanding Service Award to the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association · 1987-1988 – President of the Huntsville, Alabama Chapter of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association · 1989 – Continuous Outstanding Service Award to the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association · 1994 - USM Eagle Club · 2001 - USM Lifetime Commitment Award · 2006 - All-American Football Foundation Bill Wade Unsung Hero Award Dad also has a brick with his name on it planted on the edge of Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, MS. He had told me about this a year ago and a funny thing happened when my wife Lisa and I went out to visit last year we happened to see the football field open, walked out towards the field and there it was in the middle of hundreds of other bricks! There’s Buddy Long #77 on a brick sticking out very noticeable. It was just one of many many proud days I have had of my Dad. As a child my dad took very good care of my sister, my mom and I with a warm home to grow up, security and yes he did spoil the crap out of us all. He was my mentor; my football and basketball coach and he coached nearly all my little league baseball teams up until I was a freshman in high school. We almost always had winning teams. Even years where the players where all young we would always end up in the race for the pennant because my dad was good and he inspired all of us to be better. He had that unique quality to inspire and make a person want to be better as he always worked on being a better man himself. I attribute my ambition, my love for my family and friends and my positive attitude, even in hard times to my dad.
