My Story

Bob Swanson, age 90, of 1096 Huber Ave., Galesburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom he accepted in 1952, at 1:42 p.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.  He was born June 17, 1921 in Cedar Twp., Knox County, Ill., the son of Carl and Mayme (Gehrett) Swanson.

He married Lois Cook on November 2, 1941 in Galesburg. Surviving is his wife of 70 years, Lois; two sons, Stephen Russell (and Pamela) Swanson of Pleasanton, Calif. and Thomas Robert (and Lynn) Swanson of Roseville, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Thomas (and Wendy) Swanson, Tracy (and Will) Neil, Tyler Swanson, and Alyssa (and Ari) Shaeffer; four great grandchildren, Abbey Marie Swanson, Riley Annika Swanson, Stella Rose Neil, and Ruby Lila Neil; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Russell; and two sons in infancy.

Bob graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Corps of Engineers out of Ft. Leonard Wood.  After the war, he worked at Brown Motor Company as a mechanic. Bob operated gasoline service stations at Prairie and North, Kellogg and Ferris, and Chambers and Main Streets, retiring in 1983. Bob was a born again charter member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He and his wife were youth directors for 25 years, from which many young people went into full time service for the Lord.

The BBYG created this 'Tribute to Bob Swanson' to have a place to share special thoughts and memories about Bob with others that knew and loved him.
Bob was a JOY to our lives and he will be dearly missed but forever LOVED.  "We salute YOU Bob, you helped change our lives and you helped countless others."  Bob's life was faithful to the end, and his passion for Jesus will always be remembered.
