My Story


Sandy was born in Paris, France in 1921. His life with his brother Guy was uneventful until the untimely death of his mother Harriett in 1939. He attended university in Paris, and with the German occupation of WWII he joined the Free French Army. At the end of the war he settled in Montreal, Canada, where he met and married Gertrude Aikens in 1950. Life was never the same after that! In 1954 they adopted their daughter, Sandra. Over the following years he held advertising jobs with a number of companies, finishing his career at the Department of Trade and Commerce in the Canadian Government. He travelled extensively throughout the world, on business and pleasure, and in his spare time he could be found at his cottage at Belmont Lake, and later at Rideau Ferry. He and Trudy retired to South Carolina where he played golf, badly, but energetically, and painted  pictures and drew pen and ink sketches that he sold locally.  At some point while there, he was diagnosed with alzheimers, and although he held it at bay for many years, it finally caught him. It consumed his mind, but it did not touch his kind heart and gentle soul.
