My Story

Oliver Martin Harris, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania June 18, 1922, was the son of Oliver Garfield and Amelia Harris. He lived in a Christian home, and became a Christian, himself, at age nine. Oliver had five siblings: Ruth Hanson (deceased), Joseph (deceased), Paul (deceased), Esther Hanson, and Grace Pazlar (Charles). He served in the Army Air Corps in 1942 during World War II. He earned his M. Ed. at Oneonta State College in New York, and met his wife Jean, at Nyack College. They were married in 1954. Oliver taught in the Alliance Academy in Quito Ecuador for two years, then returned to New York State to teach in the Corning City School District. Oliver and Jean moved to California in 1963 where he taught school until his retirement in 1987. Fluent in German, he enjoyed teaching Bible studies and adult Sunday School classes, playing the violin, and woodcarving. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, his daughters—Janet Cherry (Mark) and Pamela Fisher (Scott)— and eight grandchildren: Melissa, David (Ashlie), Jonathan, Benjamin, Bethany, and Andrew Cherry; Connor Fisher and Olivia Fisher.
