My Story

Alexus was my beautiful little angel that did no wrong in my eyes.  She was born on March 19, 2006; she was 5 lbs. 1 oz. and 19 inches long.  The first couple months of Lexi's life, she was a normal healthy baby.  At the age of six months, however, she had her first seizure.  It lasted only a couple minutes, but the left side of her body was paralyzed for almost an hour.  The dr told us she had a febrile seizure, which is a seizure caused by a fever.  After that, she started having seizures regularly, some were long and some were not so long.  They then told us that she had atypical febrile seizures, meaning that she didn't have to have a fever in order to have a seizure.  At fifteen months she finally got diagnosed with severe myoclonic epilepsy, we had been in and out of several childrens hospitals looking for a diagnosis or a reason for all the prolonged seizures.  So I was excited that she finally had a diagnosis, because I thought now they know what it is so they can fix her.  But that wasn't so!  Medicine didn't really work for Alexus, it helped a little bit but the prolonged seizures were still there.  She would have petit mal seizures at least one type every ten minutes.  The prolonged grand mal seizures would only come when she had a virus or any change in her body.  Even though we were in and out of hospitals all the time and she was being poked and prodded all over all the time, she was still a perfect little angel that always had a smile on her face.  Nobody could hurt her in her world, cuz her world was filled with nothing but love for everyone and everything.  She knew she was God's little angel.  On March 12, 2008 at 4:50 a.m. I woke up to find her in a seizure; so I called 911 immediately and had her rushed to St. Rita's.  Her seizure never ended until 9 a.m. that morning, it was non-stop.  She had several strokes and went blind during this time, she was sent to Nationwide Childrens Hospital where she died the next morning from brain death.  Her body couldn't take anymore, it was time for her to go home and be healed with a new body; so she could watch over us and keep us safe.  It hurts so bad that she is gone, but I now know that its better for her because she no longer has to suffer anymore.  I loved her more than anything in this world and now I know I have to live my life right to be able to see her again!  She was my precious, precious daughter!  Alexus was a hero:  She donated her heart to a 7 month old little boy and gave him a second chance to live.  She touched so many lives while she was on this earth, she will never, ever be forgotten!  I love you so much baby girl!  Mom

The absolute worst thing I have ever had to do in my entire life was to be by my daughters side and assist the doctors with the neurological exam to prove to me that my baby girl was gone!  I have nightmares every night about it and a lot of times just out of the blue during the day when I least expect it to pop into my head I get visions of them tests that they did on her.  The tests seemed so inhumane, yet it is something that they have to do in order to pronounce somebody dead by brain death.  I couldn't and just wouldn't accept the fact that I had lost her, that she had stopped fighting; so they needed me to be in the room while they performed these tests.  I don't know how to get those images out of my head and I would never ever wish anybody to have to see or go through something like that!
