My Story

Sheridan Louise Steele

Sheridan was born at 22 weeks gestation, weighing 1lb 3oz and was 11 inches long, she had bright blue eyes and thick black hair, I went into labour with her in my home in Ballarat but was very sick so I was flown by air ambulance to The Monash Medical Centre where Sheridan was born about 15 minutes after I arrived there, The labour was short and Sheridan came into the world at 2.02pm on that Sunday afternoon, I delivered her alone, no Daniel, no Family as they were all on their way from Ballarat by car. It was a lonely scary experience but also a very special and amazing experience, doing it all on my own, seeing my Daughter for the first time, alone. Just me and her. (and about 6 dr's & nurses but it was as if they didnt exist)  Sheridan was quickly whisked away to the NICU to be checked over by her Specialist Dr Faggman. After I was cleaned up, I  was wheeled down to see her again in the intensive care unit, she lay on her little cot bright red & brusied from her ordeal at being born premature, but she opened her eyes when I spoke to her, she looked directly at me, she knew I was her Mum, she squirmed around as she was being prepared for all the tubes & wires etc that the Drs put on the premmies, after they had her hooked up to all the machines she was covered in a plastic wrap that kept the warmth & moisture in the cot, not long later Daniel & My Family arrived, Mum organised for Sheridan to be Christened, later on that sunday night my Daughter was Baptised a Catholic with My Sister Joanne & Cousin Les being her God parents. The Priest Christened my Daughter in a tiny sea shell, I still have that shell and will never part with it. Sheridan had a battle on her hands, her breathing wasnt too good so they put her on Oxygen, she was in pain so the Dr gave her a tiny drop of morphine, after he did so; I called her name and she tried her hardest to open her eyes to look at me and she managed to open just one eye and looked straight at me again, that would be the last time she opened her eyes. All through the Monday she would be up & down with her breathing and then during the Tuesday morning at about 3am she was doing really well so I went to bed & woke at about 8am very happy that she was doing so well, then in walked the specialist with a Nun I had been speaking to, they explained that she had gone downhill once again and they hadnt been able to get her back to where she had been, they suggested that we turn off the life support, I was adamant that there was no way I was going to do that, but after seeing her again and knowing there was no chance that she was going to come out of it, I made the most painful decision Ive ever had to make, I decided to remove her life support and let my Baby die in my arms, at least she will be held by her Mother knowing she was immensely loved when she took her last breath. Most of our Family came to say good bye to her, to hold her and tell her they loved her, she was only on this earth for two days, but she was loved by all who knew her, she is still loved beyond belief, I will never forget My precious Daughter, she was the best thing that had ever happened to me, the day I burried her was the day I burried half my heart & soul along with her, she is my heart, she is my soul, and I will never be the same, never be whole until we meet again.  I Love You Sheridan, My Angel Baby xx
